During the period of my artist residency at Casa Wabi, I developed an Installation Workshop for the Telesecundaria (Secondary School) of the community El Venado, Tututepec.

I introduced the students to the concept of installation, and later site-specific installation, focusing on making it an approachable and inexpensive way for them to create, using unusual art materials, such as day to day materials available to them in their community.

El Venado has Afro-Mexican roots and is deeply bonded musically to the African culture, although this fact is not well known nor recognized by the majority of the Mexican population.

By exploring different landscapes of their community and the materials they use every day for fishing, or gathering coconuts, we started to decontextualize them and soon they became tools for self -expression and creation. This is how, for the closing of the workshop, we used a particular structure, created with palm trees,  which is built to provide shadow and protect the coconut peeler from the sun while he is working. Using this structure, which resembles a triangle, we built a pyramidal structure, which is pictured in the photos. The students and children of the community had the idea to set the structure on fire and to watch the fire melt away all the work we put into building it and all other possible uses of this material while celebrating it by dancing and singing around it until it became its ultimate purpose: invisible.
